Oil and Gas update losing steam – New Mexico News Port

For this story I teamed with Elijah Barela and Kyle Smith to look at the biggest oil and gas act introduced during this year’s state legislature. House bill 133 would have updated the oil and gas act first created in 1935, giving it more teeth. The bill was stripped of many of it’s more ambitious elements and this story looks at what the bill would have done and what the changes were.

NM overhauls high school graduation requirements – New Mexico News Port

During the 2024 state legislature a bill to change high school graduation requirements was passed through the house and senate. House Bill 171 changes the class requirements, like Algebra II no longer being required, while keeping the 24 credits needed to graduate.

Income Tax stalls in NM – New Mexico News Port

A proposal for a flat income tax rate to come to New Mexico, House Bill 280, failed to get passed. In the U.S flat income tax rates are becoming more popular, as five states changed to it in a 15-month period. In the story I highlight some positives and negatives of the bill.

This story was a team effort covering all the changes affecting the University of New Mexico to come out of this year’s 30-day legislative session. Some of the changes we look at are the lottery scholarship, as well as the amount of money the university and its educators are getting in the new year.
